Displaying ReviewsRating filters

Rating filters

Shoppers who compare many products like to narrow the list down to the well-rated ones. With Shopify’s free Search & Discovery app, your collections and search results get a rating filter, like “4 stars and up”. It works with your theme’s existing filters; no code is needed.

Where to place it

  1. Collection pages, in the filters
  2. Search page, in the filters

How it works

FiveOh writes a metafield called FiveOh Rating buckets (rating_buckets) on every product and variant with reviews. It lists every rating step the product reaches: a product rated 4.6 has 1+, 1.5+, 2+ and so on up to 4.5+. A product rated 5 also gets 5.

So a filter on 4+ finds every product rated 4 or higher, whatever its exact rating. The values update whenever a review changes the rating.

Setting up the filter

  1. Install Search & Discovery from the Shopify App Store, if you have not yet.
  2. In the app, open Filters and click Add filter.
  3. As the source, choose the product metafield FiveOh Rating buckets. To filter variants instead, choose the variant metafield of the same name.
  4. Name the filter, for example Rating, and save.

The filter now shows in your collection and search pages, next to price, size and the other filters.

Naming the options

Search & Discovery lists every step as an option, from 1+ to 5. Rename them in the filter’s settings so they read well, for example:

ValueShown as
4.5+4.5 stars & up
4+4 stars & up
3+3 stars & up

Troubleshooting

  1. The metafield is not offered as a source: check that FiveOh is installed and has finished its first calculation. The definition is created on installation.
  2. Products without reviews are missing from the filtered list: that is expected. Without reviews, a product has no rating step to match.
